Little Women Book Summary

Little Women by Louisa May Alcott Book

The novel opens up with the March family's four daughters, Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy. Meg is the elder one; she is a pretty woman who is very fond of luxuries and material things. Jo is the second one. She is extremely fond of reading books and has a tomboy personality. Her dream is to become a world-famous writer. Beth is the third one with a kind, shy, and gentle nature. She is such a sweet lady who is willing to take care of others. Finally, we have Amy, the youngest daughter of the March family, who loves to draw. She is the most pampered and spoiled kid of her parents.

The story is about how the March family has fallen into hard times. How the March sisters overcome difficulties and hope for a better future. Now, we went back to the story. The March family is one of the wealthiest families but has fallen into despair because of the civil war. Father was a minister who served in the war. They have to work hard to run their livelihood. As Christmas arrives, girls want presents but can't afford them, yet they feel happy to have each other as their backbone.

On Christmas morning, her mother told their daughters to help the nearby neighbours, Hummels, by giving them meals. The sisters' kind gestures and charitable activities attract her wealthy neighbour, old Mr Laurence, who is feared by all because of his rudeness.

Mr Laurence, as for their kind gestures towards others, provides them with a luxurious feast. Soon, Meg and Jo are invited by Meg's wealthy friend, Sally Gardnier, to attend a New Year's Eve Party where Jo retreats to an Alcove, and there meets Laurie's nephew. While dancing, Meg sprains her ankle. Laurie escorts the sisters home. After the holiday festivities, the sisters regret having to return to their daily life routine. Jo learns that Laurie has been ill and decides to check on him. Mr Laurence overhears Jo criticizing the painting of his portrait. He finds her humorous and invites her to tea.

Afterwards, Laurie plays the piano, which upsets Mr Laurence, who doesn't want Laurie to become a musician. But among all the sisters, Mr. Laurence loves Beth more because she resembles her granddaughter. One day, Beth plays the piano at Mr. Laurence's house and is ecstatic. Laurie and Marches's daughters became good friends and visited Laurie's house daily. The girls have many adventures. Amy got caught trading limes at school, and the teacher hit her as punishment.

As a result, Amy's mother withdrew her from school. Jo refuses to let Amy go with her to the theatre. So, Amy burns her manuscript, and Jo, in anger, nearly lets Amy drown while ice-skating.

Meg attends her friend's party after styling herself to high standards. She learned that physical looks are not everything. While at the party, people were ranting that she intended to marry Laurie for his money. Soon, the family receives a letter saying that Mr. March is sick in the hospital. Her mother tends to go as someone has to take care of him; in order to afford the trip, Fair Jo sells her hair.

They all neglected the household chores again. Only Beth visits the Hummels, and after one of her visits, she gets a fever from the Hummel’s baby. Amy spHummel'se at Aunt March’s house to escaMarch'sdisease. Beth recovers, though not wholly, and Mr Brooke, Laurie’s tutor, falls Laurie with Meg; even though Jo doesn't like Mr Broodoes'tt, Meg and Mr Brooke get engaged.
